 Under Florida Statute §117.05(5), a notary public must verify the identity of a signer using one of the following valid and unexpired forms of identification:

• A Florida driver license or ID card
   
• A U.S. passport
   
• A foreign passport with a U.S. stamp
   
• A driver license or ID card issued by another U.S. state or territory
   
• A U.S. military ID
   
• An inmate ID (for documents signed within a correctional facility)
   
• A sworn, written statement from a credible witness who personally knows the signer and is also known to the notary

 Not every document can or should be notarized, but most documents that require a signature can be notarized as long as they meet certain legal requirements. Under Florida Statutes Chapter 117, a notary public may notarize a document if:

• The signer is present and provides valid photo identification, unless personally known to the notary (§117.05(5), Florida Statutes).
   
• The document contains language requiring notarization, such as a notarial certificate (e.g., an acknowledgment or jurat).
   
• The notary is not a party to the transaction or benefiting from it.
   
• The document is complete (no blank spaces).
   

Examples of common notarized documents include affidavits, powers of attorney, real estate documents, loan paperwork, and sworn statements. However, certain documents—like birth certificates, death certificates, or copies of public records—cannot be notarized unless properly certified by the issuing agency.

 A notary verifies identity and witnesses the signature. Notarization adds credibility but does not make a document legally binding on its own.
